What Is Grammar?

Grammar is a framework for language. It includes:

  • Phrase
  • Tense-timeframe
  • Clause -main/subordinate
  • Verbs- action words
  • Nouns - person/name/concept/animal/thing
  • Pronouns-replaces a noun (it)
  • Infinitive verbs - most common form of a verb "re" "er" "ir"
  • Finite verb - when a verb has been altered for tense
  • Reflexive pronoun - my/his/herself
  • Refelexive verb - the action is done to themselves. Uses a refelexive pronoun.
  • Subject(Nom.)-The noun or person who/which does the action
  • Object(Acc.)- The noun or person who/which has the action done to it/him/her.
  • Indirect Object (Dat.) -The person or thing to/for whom the action of the verb is occurring.
  • Adjective - Describes the noun and usually comes after the noun in French.
  • Adverb - Describes a verb (-ly at the end)
  • Preposition - Tells you where something is (on/in/out)
  • Conjunction- Joining words like "and"
  • Interrogative - Question words like who/why/how...
